JOINT PAIN MANAGEMENT - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

What is low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT)?

Low-dose radiation works differently than the radiation used to treat cancer. At very low doses, it can help calm an overactive inflammatory response. It reduces inflammatory immune-cell activity and inflammatory signals in the treated area, which may decrease swelling, irritation, and pain.

Which joints can be treated?

Low-dose radiation therapy may be used for painful osteoarthritis in the:
  • Knees
  • Hands
  • Shoulders
  • Hips
  • Feet and ankles
  • Elbows
  • Back
  • Other joints affected by osteoarthritis

Will the treatment hurt?

No. The treatment is completely painless. You will not feel the radiation. Each treatment usually takes only a few minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients receive 6-8 treatments over approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Your physician will recommend the schedule that is best for you.

When will I notice improvement?

Some patients begin feeling better within a few weeks, while others may notice gradual improvement over 2 to 3 months. Pain relief often continues to improve after treatment has ended.
